About you work
Discipline: printmaking, artists books and small bronze sculpture.
Technique: I use a wide range of techniques often combining traditional processes with new digital technology. I will be making intaglio prints during my residency.
Statement: My work is primarily about the human body. My career as a Chiropractor and Osteopath began my study of the human body and then later as a visual artist, I researched the history of anatomy and scrutinized early medical texts and practices. I became intrigued with historical representations and misconceptions of the female body, and interested in the religious and folk magic origins of healing the human body. My interest in depicting the body peaked with a visit to La Specola Museum in Florence. Since then, much of my work is emblematic of my ongoing fascination with the human body and its functionality. Votive offerings are central to my work and my imagery. Exvotos have existed for thousands of years in many cultures. Often taking the form of the body part that is to be healed, these magical artefacts are activated by placing them on a shrine and offering prayer to a patron saint. Trondheim is a long-established centre of Christian pilgrimage. I intend to research and develop images relating to Nidaros Cathedral, which is built on the gravesite of Saint Olaf. A spring with healing properties is said to have originated from his grave and believers came here to drink from a holy well.
Plans for your residency?
I plan to make some new prints for my exhibition at Babel and be inspired with lots of ideas to take home to Australia.
