About your work
Discipline: Painting and drawing
Technique: Acrylic on canvas; acrylic, charcoal, pastel and graphite on paper
Statement: Through painting and drawing, I am interested in exploring the psychological impact of our built environment. I am particularly interested in the idea of a house as a container for dreams and vulnerability. For the last few years, I have been developing a body of work about an abandoned house undergoing demolition in Halifax, Canada. I was struck by the violent image of a house being torn apart. Playing with the mounds of debris, I create bulging and cavernous landscapes that swell into the viewing space and confront the viewer. Working on canvases between two and five metres wide, my aim has been to create a physical, theatrical environment where the viewer becomes an active participant in the subject – a witness, voyeur or destitute inhabitant of the ruins that lie in front of them, perhaps asking where am I in this chaos, this collapse?
Plans for your residency? Before coming to Trondheim, my father and I traveled to Sweden to visit the country of our ancestors. I will be developing some new work in drawing and video that relates to both our personal experiences and broader ideas of home, loss, and family. |
