My work explores the cultural trappings of belief, specifically in rituals occurring somewhere between personalized practice and institutional spirituality. I examine the iconography of the body, funerary rites, ritual objects in consumer society, and the quest for physical and spiritual authenticity, all with a feminist subtext. I manifest these themes through live performance, video, and art objects/environments
Careful selection of materials is very important to my process. I like to use humble materials that have a deeper cultural significance or evoke a sense of melancholy nostalgia. These objects are often cheap, throw-away, or even bordering on kitsch, but used nevertheless to convey genuine sentiment, like colored aluminum foil used to cover old cans full of cemetery flowers.
My newest project has expanded to examine the relationship between folklore and landscape, masculine rites of passage, and sexual politics on the Texas/Mexico border.
Plans for your residency?
I will be making prints and a video animation that will eventually be used in a performative installation.
