[31.01.12 - 29.02.12] Nathalie Lavoie - Canada
"I like to create situations that seem impossible or are bound to fail. I create them anyway just to see where they will lead me and what insight I can gain from them".

Nathalie Lavoie from Canada
Name: Nathalie Lavoie
Nationality: Canadian
Homeland: Canada
Town: Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories
Age: 42
How long are you resident? all of February 2012
Have you been in Trondheim before? No, this is my first time visiting Norway.
Do you wish to get in touch with somebody in Trondheim? Yes, I am looking forward to fortuitous encounters through intersecting paths and interacting with fellow artists at LKV.
Is it something you look forward to…? I am interested in exploring the Norwegian winter landscape, numerous bodies of water, frozen or not…
About you work
Discipline: various
Technique: Based in a northern environment, I developed an artistic practice that harnesses the potential of enduring winters. Recent works explore the use of water as a medium through ephemeral installations in natural or urban landscapes. A chosen site becomes the concentration of energy, a locus from which multiple interpretations emerge and vanish. The installations or performances persist only as traces by means of photographs or videos.
Statement: I like to create situations that seem impossible or are bound to fail. I create them anyway just to see where they will lead me and what insight I can gain from them.
Plans for your residency?
I will research potential local sites for the creation of ice installations. In addition, following a recent artist residency at NCCA Kronstadt, Russia, I will take some time to reflect on land use through time, informal and formal authorities overseeing sites, and the role of mediated experiences via documentation in my own work. I will also experiment printing photographs and design a layout for a book project.
