"The work considers the triggers, symptoms and decisions in one realm (political or economic institutions, academic research) that result in a counter discourse within another remote and often widespread social location (for example environmentalism, vitamins and health food movement, DIY science and technology) by observing how data materializes into outcomes or movements. Soft Data
Through the design of systems that include materials from the everyday– bread dough, plant organisms, radio, newspapers, water pumps, sparkles, light and so on, the work creates data-set systems to contemplate the transfer of information into the media landscape through discourse, economic favoring and consumer product design. The work considers the triggers, symptoms and decisions in one realm (political or economic institutions, academic research) that result in a counter discourse within another remote and often widespread social location (for example environmentalism, vitamins and health food movement, DIY science and technology) by observing how data materializes into outcomes or movements. Here the work utilizes a homemaker’s statistics as a means of discovery - today's news is just as futile as yesterdays - tomorrow’s weather is the same as today’s – but, alike the stock market, the outcome of a loaf of bread depends very much on an acute awareness: delicate shifts in atmospheric pressure affect the yeast cultures’ ability to rise, variables such as temperature, pressure, and gluten elasticity through kneading increase the complexity and risk. Here the notion of intuition is brought to the foreground to engage and confuse any preference or inherent data hierarchy.
For the exhibition, I will install a series of interconnected systems – these are installations that use banal objects, ecological investigation and communication technologies. I incorporate media from popular culture, sound and sensory elements from the local environment – acoustic ecology, and often interactions between species (yeast, bacterial, plant, human) therefore forming systems of speculation or small insignificant silhouettes that function on top of the larger, often impenetrable real-world entities that individuals attempt to navigate within or against.
Plans for your residency? 6 soundwalks with thread based map to accompany, some video and perhaps water color drawings – city soundscapes, systems |
