Toril Redalen

Toril Redalen (b. 1973 in Todalen, Nordmøre) lives and works in Trondheim and Todalen. She is concerned with what makes a material a material, and how it shapes both history and the present. Clay is a recurring material in her artistic practice, understood both as raw matter, landscape, and a basis for belonging. Inspired by Fluxus, she works with ceramic narratives in which flow is understood both as a property of the material and as a restless condition of our time. In her recent projects, she has worked across disciplines through collaboration and participatory processes. Her works often emerge as part of a larger whole within the exhibition space and rarely take on a final form.

She holds a BA and MA in ceramics from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design (2007), a degree in media studies from NTNU (2001), and a vocational certificate as a floral designer (1996). Redalen has undertaken residencies at, among others, Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik, the Kohler Factory (USA), and the Spode Factory (England). She has received state working grants since 2009 and in 2022 was awarded the Norwegian Government’s 10-year artist grant. Her works are represented in collections such as the National Museum in Oslo and the Musée de la Céramique in Grenoble.
