Welcome to the exhibition《凪庭 - NAGITEI : The Rock Garden of Nagi》by artists in residence OSOTO Lab.This work is a spatial installation composed solely of ice — a “garden” made from a single material. Three ice plates lean against one another at slight angles, forming a circular, self-supporting unit. These units are arranged across the ground, creating a field that embodies the idea of NAGI — a state of calm between movement and stillness. The work was shaped by experiences of Norway’s white-glimmering lakes, distant glaciers, layered coastal rocks, and smooth terrains. Here, NAGI signifies a balance that arises between motion and rest. As the ice slowly melts, a thin film of water forms on its surface, catching the light and shining like a tranquil sea. Each reflective plane evokes the fleeting calm that descends upon the coast of Trondheim.NAGITEI explores the beauty that resides between stillness and change. If the traditional Japanese rock garden holds “time that does not move,” this garden of ice embraces time that melts — the quiet impermanence of being. And ice, in this sense, embodies the condensed time of stone. It reinterprets the spirit of the rock garden through the ephemeral material of ice, emerging as a contemporary vision of the Garden of Impermanence.
