Soil chromatography workshop

This soil chromatography workshop is a full day and hands-on workshop at Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder on the 19th of September for artists. During the workshop participants will go through the process of how to make a soil chromatography and prepare some with their own soil samples.

The workshop dives into learning a hands-on biochemical and photographic method of making a soil chromatography on paper. The technique was developed by Ehrenfried Pfeiffer in the 1950's and it was considered groundbreaking as a pictorial method for portraying biological processes. The method was first developed to provide biodynamic farmers a snapshot of the biological activity and health of soil. The workshop reflects upon how the chromatographies can open up multiple aspects on soil in our artistic practices.

To apply, please click the sign up link at the top of this page. This will include a short motivation letter in which you introduce yourself and briefly describe your interest in joining the workshop. Pleases apply by September 13th, 2026.

Seven (7) participant artists are selected to join this workshop through an open call. Please note that the workshop lasts one day (from 10:00-18:00), and that the participants can only participate onsite. The detailed program will be sent out to the participants.

In preparation for the workshop, we kindly ask all participants to collect and bring a small sample of their chosen soil.

The workshop is part of Nordic Analog Network darkroom residency and facilitated by LKV. The workshop is based on "Down to Earth I-III" workshops led by Sirja Moberg and Aino Johansson and facilitated by the Finnish Bioart Society.

Sirja Moberg (b. 1989, Finland) is a visual artist and Master of Arts working in Helsinki. She currently studies in Specializing in public art programme in Uniarts Helsinki. Moberg works with experimental photography, installation, bioart, video and sculpture. The themes of Moberg's work are histories hidden in the natural landscape, such as meteorite lakes, trace fossil stones and bog peat. She feels important to deepen human interconnectedness to nature through photographic practices and bioart. The combination of art and science collaboration and blending it with spiritual thinking and sacred ecology are characteristic features in her work.

Moberg graduated from Aalto University’s Photography department in 2020. In 2015, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of art from the Turku Academy of Arts. She also studied at Emily Carr University of Arts + Design in Vancouver, Canada (2019). She is a vice chair of the Finnish Bioart Society. Moberg’s had solo exhibitions in Finland and abroad and her works have been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions such as at the Gamle Munch Museum, The Finnish Natural History Museum and the Finnish museum of photography.
