BABEL is an artist-run exhibition space for contemporary art in Trondheim, founded by the artists at Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder in 2006. The exhibition program is mainly based on open calls and peer review, and aims to present art that emerges from the artists’ own visions, without external directives or commercial considerations. BABEL presents a broad range of exhibitions by artists from Norway and abroad.

From October 2025, BABEL operates from newly renovated premises in a former gymnasium at LKV. The exhibition space consists of one open room of approximately 110 m², with six meters ceiling height and good natural light conditions. The space is suitable for large scale works and more complex exhibition formats. Floor plans and photos of the space are available via the link in the application.

This open call applies to exhibitions taking place in 2027 and 2028. Artists may apply with solo or group exhibitions, fully developed projects or more open exhibition ideas. Curatorial projects are also welcome. There are no formal requirements regarding the conceptual or material framework of the exhibition, beyond what is necessary to present and assess the artistic practice.

Applications are assessed primarily on the basis of submitted visual material. The portfolio should clearly present the applicant’s artistic practice and or previous work. Textual material such as a short introduction to the practice or an exhibition proposal is only required if it is necessary to understand or contextualize the project.

During the exhibition period, the artist will receive:

  • Exhibition fee: currently NOK 12,000
  • Transportation: NOK 3,000 for transportation for artists living outside Trøndelag
  • Access to workshops: free access to LKV’s shared workshops for wood, metal, printmaking, analog photography, ceramics and large scale production
  • Professional support: exhibition documentation, communication and marketing, basic hosting and mediation, and practical assistance within available capacity

BABEL is an artist-run exhibition space with limited financial resources. The exhibition fee will in most cases not cover the full costs of producing an exhibition, and artists are therefore expected to secure additional funding from external sources.

The open call is intended for professional visual artists and craft artists at all stages of their careers. Artists participating in the Residency Program for Visual artists and craft artists may apply for an exhibition at BABEL through the residency application form. Artists in the Residency Program for Other Art Disciplines are usually not eligible to apply.
